Million Stolen from Kumari Bank

A sum of Rs. 600,000 has been stolen from Kumari Bank's Itahari branch in Sunsari district on Wednesday.

According to police, a young boy stole a bag belonging to one Gokul Prasain while he was filling up the voucher to deposit the amount.

Arghakhanchi bus, truck collision

At least 18 people died and 31 others were injured, some critically, when a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck at Narpani in Arghakhanchi district on Wednesday.

The passenger bus (Lu 1 Kha 6231) which left for Butwal collided with the Sandhikharka-bound truck (Lu 1 Kha 7827). Eight died on the spot while the others died while being rushed to Sandhikharka, the district headquarters. The incident site is 13 kilometres from Sandhikharka.

Twenty-three seriously injured passengers were airlifted to Kathmandu by a Nepal Army helicopter while the others are receiving treatment at Lumbini Zonal Hospital in Butwal.

Making matters worse a jeep set off for the rescue in the incident site met with an accident, killing a person and injuring few others. One Tam Bahadur Kumal of Wangla-9 sitting on the vehicle's roof died in the incident.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Dipendra GC said that the speeding bus and the truck collided and fell some 200 metres below. The bus was badly damaged in the incident while the truck was just overturned. All the deceased were the passengers of the bus.

"The truck hit the bus. The bus immediately swerved off the road while the truck, imbalanced after the collision , fell after few minutes," Police Inspector Govinda Panthi quoted the witnesses as saying. The driver and three passengers of the truck survived after jumping off the vehicle.

The truck loaded with some 200 cooking gas cylinders overturned and hit the already fell bus. The cylinders scattered after the incident hit the injured passengers of the bus. "There could be less number of casualties if there were not gas cylinders," said Panthi.

The security personnel, after inspecting the accident, suspect that the crash occurred mainly due to the carelessness of the truck's driver who absconded after the incident.

NAC New Planes

Senior Captain Vijay Lama of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) threw his hands in the air and cheered, as the new aircraft of the state-owned company landed today at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and made a turn towards the hangar.

Nearby, NAC Managing Director Madan Kharel was smiling broadly with pleasure and satisfaction, while over 100 NAC staff members were greeting the aircraft with a roaring round of applause.

“Finally, a new plane has arrived,” many were saying cheerfully, as they walked towards the aircraft to take a close look at it.

The expression of joy was understandable, as China-made 58-seater MA60, which landed at the only international airport in Nepal at around 1:45pm today, is the first new aircraft to be added to NAC’s fleet after 25 years.

The state-owned airline company had last purchased a new aircraft — a Boeing 757 — in September 1988, which is currently being used to carry out international operations. However, NAC has not purchased a new aircraft to conduct domestic operations since January 1986, when it had received a Twin Otter.

In all these years, many attempts were made by NAC to purchase new aircraft, but the efforts could not yield positive results largely due to political meddling.

“We are happy we’re finally able to get a new aircraft.

This will definitely strengthen our domestic operations which are currently being made with only one Twin Otter,” NAC MD Kharel told The Himalayan Times.

However, NAC will have to wait for some time to use the new aircraft for commercial purpose, as it is yet to obtain Air Operator Certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal. “We have already initiated the process to obtain the certificate and we hope to get it by May 10,” Kharel said.

Once the certificate is issued, NAC will use the new aircraft to carry out scheduled flights to Dhangadi, Bhairahawa, Biratnagar and Bhadrapur. For this, NAC had previously sent four pilots and nine engineers to China for training.

“But for the time being, American pilots sent by Avic International Holding, the manufacturer of the aircraft, will assist Nepali pilots in flying the aircraft,” Kharel said. “Hopefully, our captains will be able to handle the aircraft on their own within a month.”

NAC had received the new aircraft based on an agreement signed between Nepal and China in November 2012, which had paved the way for Nepal to buy four Chinese aircraft on concessional loan and obtain two other aircraft in the form of grant from China.

Following the signing of this pact, the Chinese government signed another agreement with the Nepal government to provide a grant and concessional loan assistance of Rs 6.671 billion to NAC to acquire and purchase six China-made aircraft.

Of the total assistance, Rs 2.943 billion has been allocated for acquisition of an MA60 and a Y12E aircraft on grant, and up to Rs 3.728 billion for purchase of another MA60 and three Y12E aircraft on a concessional loan. The concessional loan extended for 20 years comes with a grace period of seven years and 1.5 per cent interest rate.

One dead‚ two missing‚ 13 rescued

Rescuers have found the body of a worker who was trapped inside the under construction tunnel at Upper Madi Hydropower Project in Sildajure, Kaski.

The body of excavator driver Sujan Gurung of Tanahun was found buried under debris at about 7:00 pm today. While two other workers are still missing and out of contact, thirteen of them were rescued unharmed.

Sixteen workers including three Chinese workers at the tunnel construction site were trapped after a landslip blocked the tunnel entrance yesterday. Of them, 13 were rescued at 3:30 am today and rushed to Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara. Hospital medical superintendent Dr Shree Krishna Shrestha said the workers were fine and had been discharged.

Search is on for two workers missing inside the tunnel, Kaski Police chief said. The missing workers have been identified as Arjun Tamang and Narendra Tamang of Udayapur.

Rescuers kept the trapped workers alive by supplying oxygen and water from a pipe.

Sajha buses earn Millions

Sajha Yatayat has made an income of more than Rs. 40 million from sales of tickets in 2070 BS after resumption of services after a long interval.

The transport corporation which came into operation since the start of 2070 BS made an income of Rs. 43.4 million in one year from sales of ticket, said Sajha Yatayat Manager Mahendra Raj Pandey.

He said the Sajha Yatayat had arranged tickets as fixed by the government and quota reservation for women and disabled and Rs. 10 fare for students.

Altogether 2,982,823 passengers traveled by Sajha buses in one year. The fare ranges from Rs. 10- 20.

Sajha plans to add more buses in Kathmandu valley and also expand its service outside the valley if resource is available.
