Ram Baran Yadav appointed "singing nun" Ani Choying Dolma as UNICEF
Nepal 's first national ambassador on Friday.
As
an ambassador, Dolma will be a public voice against violence against children
and adolescents. According to the UN agency, around 1.6 million children work
as child labourers in the country and 5,000 live on the streets.

Nepal representative Hanaa Singer said that the singer's popularity and status
as a dignified personality will aid in sending the message that children's
welfare is of high priority.
Dolma
too promised to use her celebrity and experience to bring the issues of
children to the forefront. "I will use my songs to improve the situation
of children nationwide," said Dolma, who also runs a school for nuns.
After
being anointed the national ambassadors, the singer joins the ranks of English
footballer David Beckham, Indian actor Amitabh Bachhan, Chinese actor Jackie
Chan, Colombian pop singer Shakira, as the UNICEF ambassadors in their
respective countries.
